Five jersey words sit on an NBA rack in 2026-27 and three of them changed meaning this season. Here is what each name actually buys you, which ones are in stock today, and the one new word you cannot buy yet.

In 2026-27 an NBA jersey name describes a colourway and a role, not a quality tier. Association is the white one, Icon is the team colour, Statement is the big-number alternate, City is the one that changes every year, Classic is the throwback. The new word is Specter Edition, a fifth uniform for eight of the oldest franchises, revealed on 10 September 2026 and not on sale yet. Earned Edition stopped after the 2020-21 season. Today our NBA rack holds 2,234 men's and unisex jerseys: 958 Icon, 374 Statement, 352 Hardwood Classics, 348 Association, 74 City. Prices start at $39.90 for a Replica and $49.90 for a Swingman.
Why a Jersey Name Matters More Than a Logo
The 2026-27 NBA season opens on 20 October 2026, and the rack you will be shopping is the strangest one in years: a brand-new fifth uniform that only eight clubs get, a league-wide apparel collection that is not a jersey, and a City Edition programme that has stopped designing new jerseys and started re-issuing old ones. If you shop by picture alone you will end up paying for the wrong thing, because in the NBA the name on the tag decides the colour, the role in the rotation and whether the jersey ever comes back for a second run.
This page is a glossary, not a ranking. Each entry below is one word, what it means, what it is often mistaken for, and whether it is worth your money in 2026-27. Everything about stock and price is pulled from our own live inventory on 14 October 2026; everything about the league's uniform programme comes from the announcements themselves.
One thing worth saying before the entries start: none of these words describe how a jersey is made. Association and Icon are the same garment in two colourways. The build is described by a different set of words, and we cover those in the NBA jersey buying guide.
Association Edition
Association Edition is the white jersey, and it is the oldest piece of the modern NBA set. It is the colourway teams wear for a majority of home games, which is why it is also the one you will see on a rookie's first night and on the wall of a fan who only owns a single jersey.
- What it is
- The white home uniform. Plain base, team colours on the wordmark, numbers and trim, and the least decorative of the standard set.
- Where you will see it
- Opening night, home stands, and most of the photographs that end up on a club's own channels.
We hold 348 Association Edition men's jerseys right now, spread across the league. The white ones also sell out first in the largest and smallest sizes, because they are bought by people who want a safe gift rather than a statement.
Icon Edition
Icon Edition is the colour a franchise is known by: Lakers gold, Celtics green, Knicks blue, Warriors royal. If you can name the colour before you can name the uniform, you are describing an Icon jersey.
Icon Edition is the biggest word on our rack
Nearly half of every men's and unisex NBA jersey we hold today - 958 of 2,234 - is an Icon Edition. That is also the one with the widest size and player coverage, which matters if you need a 3XL or a name nobody else stocks.
- What it is
- The team's primary colour, the identity jersey, worn more often than any other colourway in the modern rotation.
- Where you will see it
- Most regular-season games, most highlight packages, and most of the jerseys in a stadium on a random Tuesday.
Because Icon is the deepest colourway, it is also the cheapest way into a player name. The eight franchises at the centre of this season's news - the ones getting the new Specter uniform - all carry their Icon jersey with us today at $49.90 in a Swingman build or $39.90 in a Replica build.
Statement Edition
Statement Edition is the loud one. It arrives with a bigger wordmark, stronger trim and a colourway that is deliberately off the team's main palette, and it exists so that a club has a change-of-pace look without touching its identity jersey.
- What it is
- An alternate uniform with an oversized wordmark, worn as a break from the Association and Icon rotation.
- Where you will see it
- National television, road games and the nights a club wants to look different in its own building.
We hold 374 Statement Edition men's jerseys, which makes it the second-largest group on our rack after Icon. It is also the group where designs split most sharply: fans either want the alternate immediately or they never do.
City Edition
City Edition is the word that changed the most this season, and it is the one most likely to confuse a buyer in October 2026. The programme is now in its tenth season and the league has stopped commissioning new City designs for 2026-27: every club is bringing back a design from its own history instead.
- What it is
- A yearly alternate built around a city, a district or a franchise story, and the only jersey in the set that has historically been redesigned every year.
- What changed for 2026-27
- The tenth-anniversary run re-issues past designs rather than creating new ones, and Nike has added an iridescent metallic finish to the Swoosh with the NBA logo moved to the back of the neck.
- When it lands
- Reporting points at a January 2027 retail release, later than the usual November window - so the City jerseys you can buy today are earlier seasons.
Our rack holds 74 City Edition men's jerseys. That is a small number on purpose: City designs are produced in smaller runs than Association and Icon, and when a club retires one the replacement does not reuse the old colourway. If a City jersey you like is in stock in your size, that is the one situation on this page where waiting carries a real risk.
Classic Edition and Hardwood Classics
Two different phrases describe the same idea, and both mean throwback. Classic Edition is the league's wording for a retro colourway in the current uniform set; Hardwood Classics is the retro label you will see on a large part of the resale and retro rack, including almost every vintage-style jersey we stock.
- What it is
- A colourway, wordmark or trim taken from a specific earlier era of the franchise, worn as part of the modern set.
- Why the two names exist
- One is a uniform-set designation, the other is the retro product family. A jersey can be a Classic Edition uniform and a Hardwood Classics product at the same time.
We hold 352 Hardwood Classics men's jerseys, which makes the retro group larger than Association, City and Statement combined at some sizes. Retro designs are also the least likely to be discounted later, because the buyer for them is not comparison shopping.
Earned Edition
Earned Edition is the word that disappeared. It was awarded to the teams that reached the previous season's postseason, which is where the name came from: you earned the extra jersey rather than choosing it. Nike and the NBA used it in two seasons only, 2018-19 and 2020-21, and it has not been issued since.
Earned Edition, 2018-19 and 2020-21
A bonus uniform for playoff teams, worn a handful of times, produced in one run, and then quietly retired after the 2020-21 season. Thirty-two designs in total across both seasons.
The same designs, now called City Edition
For 2026-27 at least three clubs - Boston, Cleveland and Minnesota - are bringing their 2018-19 Earned uniforms back as this season's City Edition. The word is gone; the colourways are not.
Specter Edition
Specter Edition is the genuinely new word of the season. Nike and the NBA revealed it on 10 September 2026 during New York Fashion Week, and it goes to eight franchises only, chosen for age rather than market size: the Lakers, Celtics, Warriors, Knicks, 76ers, Pistons, Hawks and Kings.
- What it is
- A fifth uniform for those eight clubs, built on a dark base with each franchise's own iconography worked in through gradients and streaks, and a smaller wordmark with the Swoosh moved up towards the centre of the chest.
- When it goes on sale
- Later in the autumn of 2026, after the wider season collection. One club's version has been reported for November; there is no single league-wide retail date.
The reaction to the eight designs has been unusually loud, mostly because one dark template was applied across eight very recognisable colour schemes. That is a taste argument, not a product-line argument - and taste arguments are exactly why the older colourways stay on sale.
Standard Issue Collection
Standard Issue is the phrase that caused the most confusion this autumn, because it appeared in the same announcement as Specter and it sounds like a jersey edition. The phrase names something else. Standard Issue is the 2026-27 league-wide apparel collection: training and warm-up pieces and travel wear for all thirty clubs, plus jerseys, released in two waves on 15 September and 12 October 2026.
- What it is
- A season-long apparel programme across all 30 teams, with a modern relaxed fit and a lighter performance construction.
- Why the word edition does not apply
- An edition names a colourway in a club's uniform rotation. Standard Issue names a collection that sits around the uniform, including hoodies, pants and shorts.
Which of the Eight Franchises Has Stock Today
Here is the part that is specific to us rather than to the league. Of the eight franchises getting a Specter uniform, every one has men's jerseys on our rack today, and the depth varies a great deal: the Knicks, the 76ers and the Celtics carry well over a hundred men's jerseys each, while the Kings and the Pistons run in the thirties and forties.

Every one of those jerseys is available in both builds - a Replica at $39.90 and a Swingman at $49.90 - and every one of the eight clubs offers a custom version if you want your own name rather than a player's. Sizes run from small to 3XL, and if you are buying for someone else the safe move is the size guide rather than a guess: check the measurements against a shirt they already own.
Replica, Swingman, Authentic - the Words That Decide the Price
Edition names tell you which colourway you are buying. Product-line names tell you what the garment is, and on our rack those are the words that move the price. Two jerseys of the same colourway, same team and same player can differ by ten dollars purely because of this layer.
The screen-printed build. Team wordmark, player name and number are printed rather than stitched, the fabric is lighter, and the fit is the roomiest of the three. This is the jersey most fans actually wear to a game.
The middle build, and the one we sell most of. Heat-applied twill lettering, a proper jock-tag treatment, a closer cut through the shoulders and a fabric that reads more like the on-court version from a few feet away.
Both builds can be ordered with your own name and number instead of a player's, in the same colourway. Lead time and available sizes depend on the design; the sizing rules do not change.
Prices verified against our live inventory on 14 October 2026 and shown in US dollars. Authentic, the third build, is heavier, cut tighter and usually the most expensive; whether it is worth it depends on whether you care about stitch weight, which we break down separately.
- If you want the cheapest way to look right at a game, take the Replica.
- If you want the lettering to feel like the on-court product, take the Swingman - it is the ten dollars most people are happy they spent.
- If you are unsure between two sizes, size down for a Swingman and stay true for a Replica; the cuts are not identical.
For the full build comparison read the Replica vs Authentic breakdown, which covers stitching, fabric weight and shrinkage. We deliberately do not repeat it here so that the two pages stay useful on their own.
