The Three Cuts, and Who Each One Is For
Every NBA jersey on sale falls into one of three families. Everything else — Icon, Association, Statement, City, Classic — is a colourway within those families, not a different garment.
| Fast Break | Swingman | Authentic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $35 – $45 | $45 – $60 | $100 – $180 |
| Numbers | Screen-printed | Heat-applied twill | Stitched twill |
| Fabric | Light mesh | Mid-weight mesh | Heavy, structured |
| Fit | Loosest, runs big | Athletic, runs one size large | On-court, long and tapered |
| Buy it if | Budget or kids | You want the standard fan jersey | You want what the players wear |
The honest advice: Swingman is the answer about 80% of the time. Authentic is genuinely better made but costs twice as much for a difference most people stop noticing after a week. Fast Break is the value play if you are buying two or buying for a child.
The Edition Names, Decoded
- Icon Edition — the team's primary colour. The safest and best-selling choice.
- Association Edition — white with team trim. The classic road look.
- Statement Edition — the alternate, usually a darker or bolder colour.
- City Edition — the annual design programme. Striking, and dates faster than the others.
- Classic / Hardwood Editions — retro designs, usually via Mitchell & Ness. Great looking, different fit.
All Nike editions use the same size chart within a cut. Choose on colour, not on fit.
Sizing in One Paragraph
Measure your chest. Swingman runs about one size large, Fast Break up to two, Authentic one large but longer. Take your measured size for the classic drape, down one for streetwear, up one to wear over a hoodie. Full charts are in our NBA size guide — the short version is that NBA jerseys are long, and length is what people get wrong, not chest.

When the Expensive Jersey Is Not Worth It
- You are buying for a child — Fast Break. They will outgrow it before the stitching matters.
- You will machine wash it weekly — Swingman. Authentic twill is tougher than people expect but not indestructible.
- You want it for the gym — neither. Buy a replica training top.
- You are buying for the look, not the collection — Swingman. Nobody can tell the difference at a game.
The one case where Authentic is unambiguously right: you are buying a retirement jersey, a milestone jersey, or something you intend to keep boxed. Then the stitched twill and heavier fabric are the point.
Where to Save and Where to Spend
- Save on — your first jersey. A Swingman in Icon Edition is the right answer and costs under $60.
- Save on — anything for a child under 14. Fast Break, one size up, and replace it in two years.
- Save on — City Edition if you like it but are unsure. It dates faster than any other edition.
- Spend on — a retirement or milestone jersey you will keep. This is the one case for Authentic.
- Spend on — a Hardwood Classics piece from a design era you actually care about. Mitchell & Ness jerseys are built differently and worth it.
The pattern is simple: spend when the jersey is a keepsake, save when the jersey is clothing. Most purchases are clothing.
