Why a Football Shirt Fits Differently Than an NFL or NBA Jersey
If you bought your last jersey in an American size and it came back baggy, this is why. A football shirt is built to be worn on a pitch, close to the skin, with no padding underneath and no need to layer over a sweatshirt. That means three things: a narrower chest, a shorter body, and a higher armhole.
An NFL Game jersey is cut with room for a hoodie. An NBA Swingman is cut long and square. A football shirt is cut like a fitted tee — and if you order your usual American size expecting the same amount of air, you will be surprised by how snug it feels across the shoulders.
The good news is that football sizing is more consistent than American sizing. Once you know your chest measurement, you can buy a Real Madrid home shirt, a Bayern away shirt and a Napoli third shirt in the same size and have all three fit the same way.
The Only Measurement That Matters: Your Chest
Forget height, forget weight, forget what it said on the last shirt you owned. Football shirts are sized on chest circumference, and everything else follows from it.
To measure: stand relaxed, wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest — usually just under the armpits and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape level all the way round and snug but not tight. Breathe normally and read the number. That is your chest measurement, and it is the only number you need.
Every table we pack to lives on our size guide page — men's, women's and youth, in inches and centimeters — so what you read there is exactly what ships.

One thing to hold in mind when you read those tables: the men's chart is a standard athletic cut, and a football shirt is cut closer through the body than an American football or basketball jersey in the same row. Snug across the chest is the correct fit on a football shirt. If you want the loose terrace drape, take the next size up rather than assuming the chart is wrong.
Fan Edition vs On-Field Match: Two Cuts, Two Fits
Most clubs sell the same design in two different garments, and they do not fit the same way. Knowing which one you are buying matters more than the number on the label.
| Fan Edition (Replica / Stadium) | On-Field Match (Player Spec) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | Relaxed athletic fit — room in the chest and waist | Slim, tapered, cut close to the body |
| Fabric | Slightly heavier, fan-friendly knit | Lightweight, high-stretch, vented |
| Sizing | True to size | Runs about one size slim |
| Best for | Wearing to the pub, the stadium, the sofa | Wearing to play, or a sharp tailored look |
| What to order | Your measured size | One size up from your replica size |
If you want the shirt to look the way it looks on the players, go Fan Edition and take your measured size. If you want the shirt the players actually wear, go On-Field — and size up.
Do Home, Away and Third Shirts Fit the Same?
Yes. Within the same season and the same cut, a club's home, away and third shirts all use the identical pattern and the identical size chart. A medium home shirt and a medium third shirt will fit the same.
The exceptions are worth knowing. Retro and heritage releases sometimes use the looser cut of the era they are copying. Long-sleeve versions can feel tighter across the upper arm even though the chest is unchanged. And a few special releases — centenary shirts, charity editions — occasionally use a different blank. When in doubt, the size chart on the product page beats any general rule, including this one.
Youth Sizing: How Much Room to Leave
- Youth sizes run on height and age first, chest second — match the height row on our size guide, then confirm the chest range.
- If the child is between sizes, size up. A shirt that is slightly big gets worn for two seasons; one that is slightly small gets worn twice.
- Youth XL tops out at a 32 to 34 inch chest, and adult S starts at 38 — so once youth XL is tight across the chest, adult S is the next step, not another youth size.
- Kids' replica shirts are not as slim as the adult version — the cut is straighter through the body.
Women's Football Shirts
Most clubs now offer a women's cut, and it is genuinely different: narrower shoulders, a shaped waist and a shorter body. It is not a men's shirt in a smaller size, and converting across is the main reason women's shirts come back.
| Women's size | US dress size | Bust (in) | Bust (cm) | Waist (in) | Waist (cm) | Hip (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 4 – 6 | 33 – 35 | 84 – 89 | 26 – 28 | 66 – 71 | 36 – 38 |
| M | 8 – 10 | 36 – 38 | 91 – 97 | 29 – 31 | 74 – 79 | 39 – 41 |
| L | 12 – 14 | 39 – 41 | 99 – 104 | 32 – 34 | 81 – 86 | 42 – 44 |
| XL | 16 – 18 | 42 – 44 | 107 – 112 | 35 – 38 | 89 – 97 | 45 – 47 |
| 2XL | 20 – 22 | 45 – 48 | 114 – 122 | 39 – 42 | 99 – 107 | 48 – 51 |
For the oversized terrace look, buy men's and take your women's size plus one — football shirts are already slim, so the men's cut in a slightly larger size reads as deliberate rather than baggy.
Youth Football Shirt Sizes
| Youth size | Numeric tag | Age | Chest (in) | Height (in) | Height (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 8 | 6 – 8 yrs | 26 – 28 | 48 – 52 | 122 – 132 |
| M | 10 – 12 | 9 – 12 yrs | 28 – 30 | 52 – 58 | 132 – 147 |
| L | 14 – 16 | 13 – 15 yrs | 30 – 32 | 58 – 63 | 147 – 160 |
| XL | 18 – 20 | 16 – 18 yrs | 32 – 34 | 63 – 67 | 160 – 170 |
Height is the number to check first here: Youth S is cut for ages 6 to 8 and 48 to 52 inches of height, and the chest range widens as you move up the rows. When a child outgrows youth XL — a 32 to 34 inch chest — the next step is adult S, not a bigger youth size, because length is what they have run out of.
Do Sizes Vary Between Brands?
Yes, by about half a size, and it is predictable. adidas cuts closest to the body — a medium adidas shirt feels tighter than a medium Nike. Nike sits in the middle. Fanatics-branded fan shirts cut the roomiest of the three and are the safest choice if you are between sizes and unwilling to size up.
Retro and heritage releases are their own category: they often reproduce the looser pattern of the era they reference, so a retro shirt can run a full size roomier than the current-season version from the same brand. Check the chart on the product page rather than assuming the brand's modern cut.
Five Fit Mistakes Football Shirt Buyers Make
- Using your American t-shirt size as the answer. Football shirts run one size slimmer than the same letter in an NFL jersey.
- Ordering On-Field Match at your replica size. Player-spec shirts run about one size slim.
- Measuring a bare chest when you plan to wear the shirt over a long-sleeve all winter.
- Ignoring brand differences. adidas cuts closest to the body, Fanatics the roomiest.
- Reading a slim fit as a fault and sizing up twice. One size up is the useful maximum.

The Five-Second Fit Check
When the shirt arrives, put it on and check four things before you take the tags off.
- Shoulder seams sit at the edge of your shoulder, not halfway down your bicep and not up on your neck.
- You can slide two flat fingers between the fabric and your chest — snug, not stretched.
- The hem lands around the top of your back pocket, not below it.
- Raise both arms. If the whole shirt rides up past your navel, it is too small across the chest.
Two of those four failing means exchange it. Sizing up a football shirt is almost always the safer call — a shirt with a little air in it looks fine on the terrace, and a shirt that is painted on does not.
