Three Ways to Get a Name on the Back
Before looking at what printing can do, it is worth knowing that printing is not the only route — and for some names it is not even the best one. This matters most on national-team shirts, where six of the eleven nations we stock have no ready-made player versions at all — the national team jerseys hub lists which.
The shirt ships already printed with a current player's name and number.
Best when: the player you want is already offered. Simplest order, no decisions to make.
The same shirt, printed with the name and number you choose at checkout.
Best when: you want your own name, a retired player, or a name nobody stocks.
The shirt as it comes, with a clean back.
Best when: you want the design on its own, or you plan to wear it outside football.
The part most fans get wrong is ordering a custom shirt for a name that already exists as a player version. Player versions ship ready-printed, so if the name you want is in stock that way, it is the shorter path to the same result.
What Can Actually Be Customised
The custom option covers what goes on the back. Everything else about the shirt — the colourway, the cut, the crest and the trim — stays exactly as it is on the standard version of that same shirt. You are not ordering a different garment; you are choosing what is printed on it.
That means the full breadth of the range is open to you: home, away, third and retro colourways, short and long sleeves, and men's, women's and youth cuts. Several national teams carry custom versions in both home and away, and club custom versions cover the usual suspects as well as a long tail of sides that rarely get printed at all.
Five Checks Before You Order
A printed shirt is the one order you cannot easily change afterwards, so run these five before you check out.
What to Do and What to Avoid
DO
- Settle the size before choosing the printing
- Check for a ready-printed player version first
- Use the women's and youth tables for those cuts
- Take the larger size if you sit between two
- Order the same cut you already wear
DON'T
- Assume a bigger size fixes a printing problem — it does not
- Order a men's size for a women's or youth shirt
- Rush the spelling because the shirt is nearly sold out
- Expect the printed version to fit differently
- Leave the number as an afterthought
Why Size Comes Before Printing
This is the single most common mistake, and it is worth being blunt about: once a name and number are on the back, that shirt is yours. So the order of operations is always measurement first, printing second.
We keep the complete men's, women's and youth tables — inches and centimetres — on our size guide page, and our football shirt size guide covers how the fan cut differs from the athletic cut, and how home, away and third shirts compare in the same size. If you are buying for someone else and cannot measure them, the fan cut at the larger of two sizes is the safer call.
The version question — replica versus on-field — is separate, and we cover the full three-tier breakdown in our replica vs authentic jersey guide.
