The NIL Era Changed What Sells
For a hundred years, a college football jersey had a number and no name, because the player wearing it might be gone in a year. Name, image and likeness changed the economics: players can now be paid for their jerseys, and fans can buy the actual player rather than the programme.
The result is a split market. Blank programme jerseys still dominate volume — they are cheaper, safer, and never expire. NIL player jerseys are the growth segment, and a handful of names now sell like professional stars.
Programme Jersey or Player Jersey?
| Programme (blank / crest) | NIL player jersey | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $45 – $60 | $55 – $70 |
| Risk | None — the programme is permanent | Expires when the player leaves |
| Best for | Anyone buying more than one jersey | Fans of one specific player |
| Resale | Holds value | Drops fast after the player departs |
| Our take | The default answer | Buy it if you will wear it this season |
A useful rule: if the player is a senior, or a likely early draft entry, and you are buying in November — buy the blank programme jersey instead.
The November Spike
College football jersey sales are the most seasonal of any sport. Nothing happens all summer, then everything happens in thirteen weeks.
| Period | What sells | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| June – August | Recruit and NIL hype jerseys | Wait — prices are at their peak |
| September | Programme jerseys, home colours | Stock is widest, sizes are complete |
| October – November | Playoff contenders, rivalry gear | Buy early — sizes vanish fast |
| December – January | Championship and bowl merchandise | Only buy if your team is in it |
| February – May | Draft-departure player jerseys | Avoid — the player is gone |
The single best window to buy is mid-September: every size in every programme is in stock, the season's storylines are visible, and nothing is marked up for a bowl game that has not been earned yet.
Programme Jerseys, Priced by Tier
GameDay Greats and Nike dominate, and both are relaxed replica cuts at accessible prices. There is no real hierarchy to learn — the tier system that matters in the NFL barely exists at college level for fan garments.
| Cut | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| GameDay Greats replica | $45 – $60 | The volume seller, relaxed fit |
| Nike replica | $55 – $65 | Slightly trimmer, better finish |
| Nike Untouchable | $65 – $75 | Closer to on-field spec |

Buying for a Student or an Alumni
- Current student — programme jersey in home colours, one size up. They will wear it for four years and lend it to people.
- Alumni — same answer. Nostalgia is the product; do not overthink it.
- A kid — youth sizes, programme jersey, and size up. They will get two seasons out of it.
- A diehard who already owns everything — an NIL jersey of the current star, or a throwback from a championship season.
